AU Pledges Support for Darfur Crimes Tribunal
Khartoum – North Darfur Governor and Darfur crimes prosecutor have called upon the African Union to undertake a greater role to support efforts to address the humanitarian situation in the region, support national justice by way of assisting in bring fugitives to justice and take decisive action against armed movements.

AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Dr. Aisha L. Abdullahi, is currently on a visit to North Darfur State after the recent rebel atrocities and tribal conflicts that displaced thousands of residents in the area.

The AU official met with North Darfur governor, Osman Kibir and Darfur crimes prosecutor Yassir Ahmed Mohamed.

She announced that she would discuss with UNAMID the possibility of resolving problems in North Darfur to prevent obstructing delivery of humanitarian aid.

The commissioner, at a meeting with governor Kibir in El Fashir on Tuesday praised efforts made by state government to address issues. She said the focus of her visit is on humanitarian situation. She added that she would submit a report to the AU on insecurity and tribal wars in North Darfur.

Meanwhile, governor Kibir said the situation in some of the Localities of the State created bitter circumstances after the escalation on the part of the armed movements.

The atrocities resulted in the displacement of many citizens and their suffering will also continue to increase under the presence of armed movements, he said.

The government underlined the need to deliver urgent assistance to the areas of Saraf Umra, indicating the great impact produced by the Darfur Crimes Tribunal on ground reality in Darfur. He called upon the AU to undertake a greater role towards the citizens affected by the recent escalation of the situation.

The Darfur Crimes Tribunal has called upon the African Union to undertake a role towards achievement of justice and to assist in arresting fugitive who fled to neighboring countries.

The Commissioner affirmed AU support for justice mechanisms at the state level and to give national mechanisms an opportunity to achieve justice without foreign intervention.

At a meeting with the Darfur Crimes Prosecutor, Aisha pledged support of the AU for achievement of justice adding that she would discuss with UNAMID the question of dispatching observers to the Tribunal to provide support.

The Darfur crimes prosecutor said the Ministry of Justice directed supporting the Darfur Crimes Tribunal with more than 30 legal counsels to address issues, calling on UNAMID to provide means of conveyance to facilitate their movement.

 Meanwhile, the Minister of Justice Mohamed Bushara Dosa, briefed the president of the Darfur Regional Authority (DRA) Dr. Al Tijani Al Sisi on the efforts of his Ministry to achieve justice in Darfur. The meeting also discussed security and stability issues in the region.
